I think eventually the micro aspects would be streamlined into the Moba genre, which is where I suspect most of the old, casual crowd that used to be RTS fans lurk. Relic RTSes had their issues, but they continued on that right track (At least with Company of Heroes and Dawn of War 2) by: 1) reducing those macro aspects and focusing on what's actually happening on the battlefield and 2) emphasizing the immerse aspects of the combat. It essentially backtracked the progress that Blizzard themselves had made with Warcraft 3, who recognized that Starcraft had overemphasized its macro aspects. It was essentially made in the shadow of that game's legacy as this massive e-sport in South Korea and was essentially designed as a game to please Korean pros. The issue with the game is that misinterpreted and overemphasized aspects that were believed to have made Starcraft: Brood War great.
